Adventures on Fogo Island. Went to see a dead sperm whale that washed up in Joe Batt’s Arm. The lower jaw had been removed, but the rest of it was still mostly intact. I have my fingers crossed to see some live whales by boat in the next week or two. On the same walk we saw the Long Studio of the Shorefast Foundation and the sculpture of the Great Auk on a far tip of the coast.  It was an amazing day.

Weather is still not cooperating for photographs or much outdoor activity here in Fogo Island. I took a short walk out to a rock pier to take this photo which depicts the terrain and where the houses are built in relation to the harbor.

More when the weather improves.

Arrived at Fogo Island

After two days of traveling that included three planes, a long drive, a ferry and a short drive, I have arrived at Fogo Island.

Unfortunately the weather has not been as welcoming as the very kind people (its 40 degrees F with gusty winds and rain) so I only have this photo from the deck of my new lodgings to share. I hope to share many more images soon. I may even post a regular log of my next four weeks on this small rocky island.

All I know at this point is it feels strangely comforting to be north of the 45th again.

More soon…

Residency on Fogo Island

In a couple of days I leave for Newfoundland, Canada where I will be spending four weeks on residency. While there I will be living on Fogo Island, a very small island off the northeastern coast of the Island of Newfoundland.

This is a rare and brilliant opportunity to work and study away from all the distractions of daily life. Such residencies give artists a chance live and work in a unique environment so that they may focus solely on their studio practice.  In addition, Fogo Island offers inspiration through its rugged and beautiful environment.  I plan to deeply savor this once in a lifetime opportunity. Internet access pending, I hope to share photos and drawings during my journey.
